Swellendam is the third oldest town in South Africa and was founded in 1746 by the governor of the Cape Province Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena Ten Damme. The town is not only famous for its youngberries, but also for its rich history and Cape Dutch and Victorian buildings.The Drostdy museum, built in 1746, used to be the governer’s seat, but nowadays houses a museum.
