Description about Backsberg Estate Cellars

Backsberg Estate, situated along the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountains, midway between Paarl and Stellenbosch, has been producing quality wines for over 70 years.

The philosophy of Backsberg remains that of providing pleasure and enjoyment to a broad range of wine lovers by producing wines not only with strucutre and finesse, but with a high level of 'drinkability'. Backsberg emphasises quality in all of their products and has been chosen as one of the Top 100 Wineries of the Year by Wine & Spirits Magazine in New York.

Backsberg also has a strong environmental focus. They have a holistic approach to preservation – from the seemingly smaller features such as the weight of bottles, to reserving a section of land on the farm for the Fynbos biome. Backsberg made history recently when it became the first wine producer in South Africa and one of only three in the world to gain Carbon Neutral status by sequestrating its carbon emissions.

Ultimately the core values of quality and care will always be upheld as the farm is a family business. It was established in 1916 by C.L. Back – a political and religious refugee from Lithuania. It was passed down to Sydney Back and in 1976, current owner Michael Back joined the business. Recently his son, Simon Back came on board.

The farm is ever expanding, with a popular tasting room, renowned restaurant, conference and wedding facilities and beautiful gardens. It's open every day of the year and often has special events.
